Did you know that AIDS is caused by a virus called Human Immuno-deficiency Virus, or HIV?
HIV attacks our body’s immune system, which defends us against germs, infections and bacteria. It’s important that we understand that HIV is not transmitted by kissing, mutual masturbation or by inserting fingers in the vagina or anus, unless there are cuts or lesions.
The Prevencion HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, delivered by the Centre for Spanish Speaking Peoples, promotes healthy sexual practices through education, counseling and support groups.
Prevencion also provides a supportive environment of knowledge and understanding for newcomers to Canada. Our aim is to help in the development and integration of new immigrants during their settlement. The program has three main objectives:
• To provide a safe environment where you can meet other guys like you, where you can have fun and can make the best out of being in Canada. We aim to create familiar social networks amongst our participants.
• To learn important aspects about your sexuality and gain knowledge about HIV/STI prevention.
• To talk about important topics that affect our lives, such as homophobia, our experience as immigrants, discrimination, stigma, love and friendship, sexual desire and racism, amongst others.
